This wise old principal was a good person who faithfully loved and served his Lord, but I couldn’t agree with his reasoning. Not everyone does what they do for what we might call the ‘right’ reason. Over the years, I’ve had people tell me the right (and wrong) way to do just about everything, even pray. Mostly pray, in fact. And I know they all meant well.

The focus is always forward – toward preparing for what is out in front of the athlete. Things an athlete has overcome in the past must remain in the past - a serious injury, a horrific fall, previous losses, even the loss of her mother for one of the skaters. Eyes must be forward and on the goal, the prize.

This coming Sunday is Life Sunday, and our 4th grade teacher/Band Director, Tom Farrand, is active in Lutherans For Life. He provides lots of leadership in our church and school, will lead this Sunday's Bible Class, and led us in a terrific Chapel worship today. Tom used enlarged baby pictures of our Faculty and Staff to create a guessing game and engage our students in today's lesson about the Sanctity of Human Life and God's great love for us in Jesus.

About half way through closing devotion one afternoon, and after the umpteenth time of pronouncing Juan as "Joo On" and Jose with a hard J sound and only one syllable (sort of like 'hose' but with a J), the kids began to look confused and finally asked, "What in the world is he reading?" Pesco showed the devotion to a classmate who broke out laughing and provided the correct pronunciation: "Whan" and "Ho-Za" (long 'o' and long 'a'). We all had a good laugh, including Pesco.

It's interesting some of the things we remember from long ago. I recall one afternoon in class at RF, a methods class before we went out student teaching, and I think it was Dr. Zimmer who told us that if he had his way, his preference would be to place the best teachers in his school in the lower elementary classes. The better the teacher, the lower in the grades he would place them. I was puzzled at first by what he said, but his explanation made sense and always stuck with me. I've often thought that Dr. Zimmer would have approved of my placement teaching 8th graders.

A Sunday off was somewhat rare for Dad. He appreciated his opportunity to worship on Sunday because it came only a few times during each seven week cycle (no midweek evening services back then). Death came much closer this year, and he came early...on Labor Day. Early, also, because he came to an 8th grader. I prefer the way Lindsey's mom put it, "the angels carried Lindsey away to be with Jesus." But it was still "away" - and there lies the sting. God didn't create us to be "away" - to be separated, but through our own sinfulness we have separated ourselves from God. Thanks be to God that He did not allow that separation to remain but sent His Son, Jesus, to reconcile us, to bring us who were far away back to Himself.
