This year marks the completion of 36 years for me in Lutheran schools (50+ years if I add in the time I spent as a student). For others on the faculty, their years may number a few more…or a few less…
Many people like to tell me how things “used to be” in Lutheran schools, or the world in general for that matter. I often just smile because memory can be a rather selective thing…more or less.
The kids in our schools today have more than what kids had when I began teaching 36 years ago and much more than what I had as a child. At least that’s how I recall it, more or less…
There is more for kids to learn today than when I went to school. More presidents for one thing – I had less to memorize in elementary school, 36 (Lyndon Johnson), while today’s kids memorize 44 (Barack Obama). Fortunately, the number of Commandments has stayed about the same…
While the number of hours in a day has remained fairly constant, from what I’ve observed many children seem to have more activities to squeeze into that time period than in the past. Some people say they have less time than they used to, but I don’t think that is actually possible…
There are more channels on TV…but at times it seems like there is less to watch. I’ve complained that bathtubs have less room than they used to, but most people just laugh at me, and that hurts my feelings…
I saw a candy bar the other day that advertised it was 30% bigger ('more' was the implication), but I also have a brother who used to manage a company that made a whipping agent from soy flakes which allowed more air to be whipped into products to make them appear larger. And this company was one of many candy companies that were clients of my brother.
There is less time in the school year since the State of Michigan mandated starting after Labor Day, and more people are eager for summer to begin with each passing day.
Oh yes, and God’s love for us in Christ Jesus is so very much more than we deserve or can ever fully comprehend. God’s blessings to all as we conclude another school year.
