Who Will You Vote For?

What is closer to the truth for me, however, is probably that even though I was a government major in college, there has always been a part of me that has seldom gotten overly worried about parties, candidates, or politics in general. Amused? Yes, often. Concerned? Seldom.

Whiter Than Snow

Even though I’m one of those people who likes to have snow for Christmas but then would prefer to see it go away for another year, I still enjoy seeing an occasional fresh snowfall, one that covers everything with that clean, beautiful coating of white. However, a covering is all that it is.

Predictions and Prognostications

I guess predicting the weather long-range (or sometimes even short-range for that matter) can be pretty uncertain. The predictions can be as changeable as…well, the weather.

Passive Holiness

Passive holiness – our actions do not make us holy, rather God makes us holy. “To be sure,” Luther writes, “the divinely prescribed works are good, and God is strict in demanding them of us; but these do not make us holy before God.”

Friends

Now there is actually nothing shameful about being called a servant. Moses, Joshua, and David were all called God’s servant, and Paul counted the title as an honor. Still, Jesus said, “I have called you friends.” What is the difference?

Love

The point is, most of the time love is a growing thing which takes time. And, while God calls on us to love one another, we also must admit that some folks just seem a bit harder to love than others. Still, God loves each of His children beyond measure.

The love of God does not find but creates that in which it delights; the love of man is generated by what it delights in. (Martin Luther)

The ‘Right’ Way

This wise old principal was a good person who faithfully loved and served his Lord, but I couldn’t agree with his reasoning. Not everyone does what they do for what we might call the ‘right’ reason. Over the years, I’ve had people tell me the right (and wrong) way to do just about everything, even pray. Mostly pray, in fact. And I know they all meant well.

Happy New Year

Everything gets old, as was evident by the repair bill on my Blazer last summer, the amount to make it road-worthy and safe for another fishing trip to Minnesota. The new year, 2011, is no different. Today is just the third day in, and I’m guessing that for most of us something already has taken the shine off this new year.

But the question she posed reminded me of a time in 5th grade back at Golgotha Lutheran School on Chicago's South Side. It was probably about 1963. My teacher, Miss Wilcer, one of the most creative teachers I ever had, brought in Michelob beer bottles for an art lesson.

The Doors Being Locked…

You would think that locked doors bring a sense of security, but the fact is that locking doors to begin with actually stems from a sense of fear. On that evening…of that day – the first day of the week, the disciples had locked the doors out of fear of the Jews, the same Jews who plotted and orchestrated Jesus’ crucifixion.

There is a solitary hearse outside my office window this morning and a fairly empty parking lot. As usual, the Kindergarten teacher is concerned about what time the funeral will begin, when it will end, and...will this disrupt Kindergarten pick-up at 11:25 a.m.?

The focus is always forward – toward preparing for what is out in front of the athlete. Things an athlete has overcome in the past must remain in the past - a serious injury, a horrific fall, previous losses, even the loss of her mother for one of the skaters. Eyes must be forward and on the goal, the prize.

Fortunately for me, and for you, too, we don’t have to be smarter than a fifth grader or smarter than the devil. Our salvation isn’t based on how much we know but rather on whom we know – Jesus.
