While most of us fretted and were constantly trying to work around the drips at the bottom of the ice cream mountain, keeping them from running down the cone and eventually over our hand, down an arm and then all over us, Mom started at the top and just worked her way down seemingly oblivious to the mess.

Several 'old men' raised their hands...and then their eyes widened as if they had seen a ghost.  That ghost was me - their 8th grade teacher back in 1974.  Actually, they thought I was 'old' then in 1974, but to find me still alive 36 years later seemed unbelievable.

I was near the high jump pit at last Tuesday’s Lutheran Schools Field Day in Bridgman when I heard that shout of, “Get off, get off, get off!” 

I eventually got everything straightened out, and the early el teachers had a huge laugh the next day at my expense.  For several days, parents and teachers kept asking, "Hey, have you made any little kids cry today?"

However, my extensive research shows that statistically, the chances of a pastor getting shot while preaching are about the same as a voters meeting lasting less than 2 hours - slim and none!

At my first Board meeting I asked the Board to "Tell me the story..."  As I suspected, the new policy was an overreaction to a bad experience they recently had.

Jenny chose the Droid and, with the counsel of the salesman and her, I settled on an iPhone.  If you want to know why, ask me sometime, and I won't be able to tell you.  I'm guessing that it must be easier to operate, but they didn't come right out and say that.

Ever get tired of jargon and those sayings some people spout at meetings?

But the question she posed reminded me of a time in 5th grade back at Golgotha Lutheran School on Chicago's South Side.  It was probably about 1963.  My teacher, Miss Wilcer, one of the most creative teachers I ever had, brought in Michelob beer bottles for an art lesson.
