Got Milk?
By Charles Strohacker @ 12:58 PM :: 227 Views :: Devotional

O.K., now stick with me on this one – it might take a while to get around to the point…

I read church signs. My daughter would say, “How boring!”

But I read the signs looking for humor; perhaps even to get a glimpse into what might be going on in the life of another congregation or maybe find the occasional misspelling.

Last week I repeatedly passed a sign on my way home that said: “Worship God Here  -  We’ve Got Cookies!”  And, not too surprisingly, Wednesday evening, about 10 p.m., after returning home from a meeting and passing the sign for the second time that day…I was in the kitchen baking up a tray of chocolate chip cookies for a snack.

A little aside, the ladies at my house both called out, “Don’t make those, don’t make those, we’re on a diet!” But you know they ate some anyway…

I set down a glass of cold milk and an unspecified amount of warm chocolate chip cookies on the table next to my chair and, after turning my back for just a few seconds, I came back into the living room to find my glass of milk had grown a golden colored body and long bushy tail. Ginger! Git!!

Her head was entirely inside the glass, milk coating her ears and whiskers, her tongue lapping the remaining drops from the bottom.  But give her some credit - the cat showed that she obviously has more sense than me, passing on the cookies and going instead for the milk.

The second Sunday of Easter is a favorite of our Senior Pastor – Quasimodogeniti Sunday – Latin for Like newborn babies crave pure spiritual milk.  And now we’re getting around to the point...

I like warm chocolate cookies…but I need the nutritional value of milk. And the same can be said for our spiritual health and well-being. As church and school, we provide our children with many things – most importantly, however, we invite them to be fed and nourished on the pure spiritual milk of God’s saving Word.
